Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web in 1989 and in 1991 the world's first website and web server were born. It ran on a NeXT computer at CERN. The address to the page was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.php. The page had information regarding the World Wide Web project. A visitor could find information about hypertext, creating their own website and how to search for information on the web. Hyper text is what makes web pages possible.

On average a user spends 1.5 seconds to determine whether or not they will spend time on your website. Then if your navigation is not quite user friendly enough they will leave. With the abundant number of websites out there, there are many reasons a prospective customer will leave your website, and not many reasons to stay. Get your site completed properly and have those prospects stay a while. The longer they stay the better chance you have to sell.
